Perceptions are not always the reality. It is said that “perception is reality” – but is it? Not in the case of service organizations like the Kiwanis, Shriners and other philanthropic organizations that are dedicated to raising money for charities. The perception by many is that these organizations are “old men wearing funny hats”, when in fact these are community minded organizations with a focus on helping their community and children around the world. The Kiwanis Club of Flagler Sunrise is just such an organization. The Kiwanis Club of Flagler Sunrise has been active in Palm Beach County since 1989 in their efforts to raise awareness and money for charitable causes to benefit the children in our community.
One of the biggest hurdles for organizations like the Kiwanis Club of Flagler Sunrise to overcome is the perception that organizations such as these are “made up of a bunch of old guys” – when in fact the Kiwanis Club of Flagler Sunrise is comprised of men and women members from teenagers to adults of all ages. The Kiwanis have programs that involve the youth of our community getting involved in community awareness and fund raising for charities at the high school level in clubs like the Key Club, the Builders Club at the middle school level and the Kiwanis Kids Club at the elementary school level. Locally, the Kiwanis Club of Flagler Sunrise is made up of a dynamic mix of men and women of all ages that share a commitment to helping the children of the world through the Kiwanis tradition of charitable service as they strive at building community spirit, charitable awareness and involvement with a focus on “family and fun” as a foundation. It is a great group of people from all walks of life with diverse backgrounds, all working together to build a better community.
Service organizations like the Kiwanis experienced peak membership following World War II, as men joined for the mix of socializing, charitable work and business networking. This in part created the stereotype perception of what these organizations were and did and branded them as “men’s clubs”. The Kiwanis today are a diverse organization that are actively trying to break that stereotypical perception of being “ a good old boys club” as society has changed and evolved so has the Kiwanis Club. The organization is still focused on charitable work to benefit the children of the world – but does so now in a manner that is fun, dynamic and family driven with involvement by both men and women of the community working together to better the community and to help raise money for charity. Membership develops lasting friendships and meaningful relationships with others within your community. Membership affords excellent business networking opportunities and the opportunity for you and your family to get involved in our community and help make a positive change. The rewards are many and the feeling of giving is unlike any other – make a difference – get involved and see just how rewarding and fulfilling being a member of the Kiwanis Club of Flagler Sunrise can be. |
